Knik Glacier
Knik Glacier is one of the most popular options for helicopter-accessed glacier experiences near the Anchorage and Palmer area.
Helicopter tours can land directly on or near the glacier, where guided experiences may include walking on the ice, viewing blue ice formations, exploring meltwater features, and visiting glacier pools when conditions allow.
The area is especially useful for elopements because there are options for combining glacier landings with additional remote landings in the surrounding Chugach Mountains.
For couples traveling to Alaska specifically for their elopement, the relative accessibility of the Palmer and Anchorage area also makes coordinating lodging, vendors, rental cars, and other wedding logistics easier.
Chugach Mountains
The Chugach Mountains offer a completely different look from the glacier itself. Depending on your helicopter operator, route, weather, and landing permissions, alpine landings can provide mountain views, ridgelines, valleys, and greener landscapes during summer.
If your budget allows, I recommend considering a helicopter experience with at least two landings.
One landing can focus on the glacier and your ceremony, while the second can provide a different environment for portraits, a picnic, cake, champagne, or your first dance.
This gives you significantly more variety without requiring hours of driving between locations.
What Can You Do During an Alaska Helicopter Elopement?
One of the biggest planning mistakes couples can make is treating the helicopter simply as transportation to a ceremony location.
If you’re already investing in a helicopter experience, consider giving yourself enough time to actually enjoy where you’re going.
Here are several activities that can be incorporated into an Alaska glacier elopement depending on your location, operator, weather, and current glacier conditions.
Exchange Vows on the Glacier
Your ceremony can be as simple as finding a safe, scenic location with your guide and exchanging private vows.
I recommend keeping the ceremony itself relatively simple. Wind, cold temperatures, uneven terrain, and helicopter weight restrictions make elaborate ceremony setups unnecessary and sometimes impractical.
Vow books, rings, and perhaps a small bouquet are usually all you need.
Afterward, leave time to explore rather than immediately returning to the helicopter.
Explore the Glacier
You don’t need an additional activity for the glacier to be worth experiencing.
A guided glacier walk gives you time to see blue ice, meltwater channels, ice formations, and other features that aren’t visible from the air.
Glaciers are active environments with crevasses, moulins, unstable areas, and changing conditions, so couples should never assume an area is safe simply because it looks accessible. Follow your pilot or glacier guide’s instructions and stay within approved areas.
Your operator may also provide traction equipment such as microspikes or crampons depending on the location and conditions.
Kayak or Paddleboard on Glacial Water
For couples planning a summer Alaska helicopter elopement, paddling can be one of the most unique activities to add.
Certain guided experiences offer paddleboarding on glacier melt pools or other glacial water features. Kayaking opportunities may also be available around glacier-fed lakes and areas with floating ice.

This should only be done as part of an experience approved by your guide. Glacier water is extremely cold, and glacier pools can contain hazards that aren’t obvious from the surface.
If you want to include a polar plunge, bring a swimsuit, towel, warm dry layers, and a complete change of clothes. I recommend scheduling it toward the end of your glacier experience so you aren’t spending the rest of your ceremony time cold and wet.

If your budget allows for it, this is one of the upgrades I recommend considering most.
Instead of spending all of your flight and landing time at one glacier location, a second landing allows you to experience a completely different landscape.
For example:
Glacier landing: Ceremony, vows, glacier exploration and portraits.
Alpine landing: Picnic, champagne, cake, first dance and mountain portraits.
Some operators also offer experiences with three remote landings.
When comparing helicopter packages, don’t look only at total flight time. Ask how much actual landing time is included and whether multiple landings are possible. A longer tour isn’t necessarily better if most of that time is spent inside the helicopter.
Go Heli-Hiking
Heli-hiking allows you to reach remote alpine terrain without spending several hours hiking from a traditional trailhead.
This is a good option for couples who enjoy hiking but want to dedicate more of their wedding day to exploring rather than getting to the location.
Ask the operator about the difficulty of the terrain, expected hiking distance, elevation, appropriate footwear, and how much time you’ll actually have outside the helicopter.
Add Packrafting or Another Water Adventure
Packrafting can be another option for adventurous couples and works particularly well as part of a multi-day Alaska elopement.
I generally recommend putting more involved activities such as packrafting, longer hikes, or ice climbing on a second day. Trying to fit a ceremony, helicopter flight, multiple landings, portraits, and several major activities into one day can make an elopement feel rushed.
Take a Helicopter to a Glacier for Dog Sledding
If you’re planning an Alaska helicopter elopement between May and August, glacier dog sledding is another incredible activity to consider adding to your day or multi-day adventure.
Unlike winter dog sledding, summer glacier dog sledding typically begins with a helicopter flight into the mountains. You’ll land at a remote dog camp located on the snow-covered glacier, meet the sled dogs and mushers, and then head out across the glacier by dog team.
This can be especially fun if you want your elopement to include more than a traditional glacier landing. You get the helicopter experience, time on the glacier, and an activity that feels uniquely Alaska all in one excursion.
A few things to consider when planning glacier dog sledding:
- The season is generally May through August, but exact opening and closing dates depend on snow, glacier, and weather conditions.
- Flights are weather dependent, so leave flexibility in your elopement timeline and Alaska itinerary.
- Ask how much time is actually spent dog sledding versus flying, meeting the dogs, and visiting the camp.
- Confirm clothing and footwear requirements with the operator. Conditions on the glacier can be much colder than at your departure location, even during summer.
- If you want professional photos during the experience, confirm the company’s photography policies and any restrictions on camera equipment.
- Consider scheduling dog sledding on a second day if you already have a longer helicopter elopement planned. This gives you more time to enjoy both experiences without rushing your ceremony day.
Glacier dog sledding can also be a great option for couples visiting Alaska in May or June, when you may not have access to all of the warmer-season glacier pool activities that become more appealing later in summer.
If dog sledding is one of your biggest Alaska bucket-list experiences, I recommend choosing your location and helicopter operator around it early in the planning process rather than trying to add it after everything else has already been booked.
Best Time of Year for an Alaska Helicopter Elopement
For couples interested in glacier exploration and summer activities, July and August are two of the best months for an Alaska helicopter elopement.
Both months offer long daylight hours, relatively mild temperatures, and access to many seasonal glacier activities.
July
July is a great choice if you want maximum daylight and flexibility. Long summer days make it easier to schedule several activities without feeling rushed.
It’s also an excellent time to look for experiences involving glacier melt pools and water-based activities, although their exact locations and availability will always depend on current conditions.
August
August offers many of the same summer opportunities as July. Temperatures gradually begin cooling as the month progresses, and later August can start to feel different from peak summer.
For most couples choosing between July and August, I wouldn’t base the decision solely on which month is “better.” Your preferred helicopter company, lodging availability, overall Alaska itinerary, and activity availability are equally important.
How Much Time Should You Book for a Helicopter Elopement?
This is something I would pay close attention to when comparing helicopter companies.
A short glacier landing may be enough if your only priorities are exchanging vows and taking a few portraits. However, it can feel rushed if you want a meaningful ceremony, time to explore, and an additional activity.
For an elopement, look at:
- Total experience length
- Actual flight time
- Amount of time spent on the glacier
- Number of landings
- Whether the helicopter waits during your ceremony
- Whether activities are included or booked separately
- Weight and baggage restrictions
- Weather rescheduling policies
- Private versus shared flight options
If photography is important to you, I generally recommend prioritizing landing time over simply having a longer scenic flight.
The moments outside the helicopter are where you’ll exchange vows, explore, and actually experience the location together.
What Happens if the Helicopter Can’t Fly?
Weather is one of the most important considerations when planning an Alaska helicopter elopement.
Flights can be delayed, rerouted, or canceled when conditions aren’t safe. Your pilot has the final say, and no photograph or wedding plan is worth pushing unsafe flying conditions.
Because of this, I recommend three things.
First, avoid scheduling your helicopter experience immediately before you’re supposed to fly home. Giving yourself additional days in Alaska provides more flexibility if your operator is able to reschedule.
Second, understand the company’s weather policy before booking. Ask what happens if they cancel, whether you can move the flight to another time or day, and what refund policies apply.
Third, have a ground-based backup plan.
Your wedding should still feel special even if Alaska decides the helicopter isn’t flying that day.
What Should You Wear for an Alaska Glacier Elopement?
Even during summer, conditions on a glacier can be significantly colder and windier than they were when you boarded the helicopter.
Bring layers that can easily be added or removed.
At minimum, I recommend:
- Hiking boots with good traction
- Warm base layers
- Waterproof or water-resistant outer layers
- Gloves
- Extra socks
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Water
- Snacks
- A change of clothing for water activities
For the glacier itself, wear hiking boots rather than wedding shoes.
Your helicopter operator or guide will provide specific footwear requirements and will provide microspikes, crampons, or other safety equipment depending on the experience.
Wedding shoes can always come along for another location.
Can You Wear a Wedding Dress in a Helicopter?
Yes, but keep practicality in mind.
Large dresses, long trains, veils, bouquets, camera equipment, backpacks, and other belongings all take up space and may affect baggage restrictions.

For dresses with long trains, I also recommend having an easy way to gather or bustle the fabric while walking on the glacier.

A multi-day elopement is worth considering if you want several major Alaska experiences.
Trying to fit a helicopter flight, ceremony, glacier exploration, kayaking, ice climbing, hiking, and additional portraits into one day can quickly turn an adventure into a schedule.
Instead, divide your priorities between two days.
For example:
Day One: Getting ready, helicopter flight, glacier ceremony, glacier exploration, second alpine landing, picnic and portraits.
Day Two: Kayaking, ice climbing, hiking, packrafting, wildlife experience, or another Alaska adventure.
This gives you more time to enjoy each activity and also provides additional flexibility when dealing with Alaska weather.

Before booking a helicopter experience for your elopement, I recommend asking:
- How much time will we actually have outside the helicopter?
