And your adventure doesn’t have to stop there.

During the summer, meltwater can collect on the surface of Alaska’s glaciers, creating incredible blue pools surrounded entirely by ice. With the right helicopter operator, location, conditions, and equipment, you may be able to land directly on a glacier, explore the ice, kayak across a glacier pool, and even add dog sledding to your adventure.

Instead of simply taking a helicopter to a glacier for photos, you can turn the experience into one of the most unforgettable parts of your wedding day.

This guide covers how to plan an Alaska glacier kayaking elopement, the best time of year to go, what to wear, dog sledding on a glacier, weather considerations, and other activities you can add to create a full-day or multi-day Alaska elopement.

What Is an Alaska Glacier Kayaking Elopement?

A glacier kayaking elopement combines a helicopter-access glacier experience with the opportunity to kayak on a meltwater pool directly on the glacier.

This is different from traditional sea kayaking or kayaking on a glacier-fed lake.

You’re traveling by helicopter into Alaska’s backcountry, landing directly on the glacier, putting on the appropriate glacier safety equipment, exploring the ice, and—when conditions allow—taking an inflatable kayak onto one of the glacier’s blue pools.

The experience is highly dependent on current glacier and weather conditions. Meltwater pools change throughout the season, and Alaska’s glaciers are constantly changing, which means the exact location you visit may not be determined until your elopement day.

That’s part of what makes this kind of Alaska elopement so incredible: no two experiences are exactly the same.

Where Can You Kayak on a Glacier in Alaska?

Knik Glacier is one of the best-known locations near Anchorage for couples interested in combining a helicopter glacier elopement with adventurous activities.

Located in Alaska’s Mat-Su Valley, Knik Glacier is accessible by helicopter and is known during the summer for its incredible blue ice, crevasses, and glacier melt pools.

Some helicopter operators in the area offer customized glacier experiences beyond a standard landing, including activities such as inflatable kayaking, ice climbing, and glacier exploration.

Because glacier conditions change constantly, I don’t recommend planning your elopement around one exact pool or location you’ve seen online.

Instead, plan around the experience:

Helicopter + glacier + blue pools + kayaking

Your pilot and guide can then determine the safest and most beautiful location available when you arrive.

When Is the Best Time for an Alaska Glacier Kayaking Elopement?

If kayaking on a glacier pool is one of your biggest priorities, I recommend planning your Alaska glacier elopement during the summer.

July and August are my top months.

Glacier melt pools form during Alaska’s warmer months, so summer generally gives you the best opportunity to experience the bright blue water you’ve probably seen in glacier elopement photos and videos.

July and August also give you incredibly long days, which is a huge advantage when planning an adventure elopement.

You have much more flexibility to schedule your helicopter experience around other activities without feeling like your entire day needs to be crammed into a traditional wedding timeline.

Summer still doesn’t guarantee a specific pool or kayaking conditions. Glaciers are dynamic environments, and your helicopter operator and guide will always make the final decision based on current conditions and safety.

How Do You Get to the Glacier?

For this type of elopement, the adventure starts before you ever touch the ice.

You’ll typically board a helicopter and fly into Alaska’s backcountry, passing mountains, rivers, and enormous stretches of glacier along the way.

Your pilot chooses a safe landing area based on current conditions.

Once you land, you’ll be given the appropriate safety equipment for walking on the glacier. Depending on the operator and experience you’ve booked, that may include microspikes or other glacier equipment.

This is why I strongly recommend booking a private or customized helicopter experience rather than trying to fit an elopement into a standard sightseeing tour.

More time gives you room to actually experience the glacier instead of rushing through a quick landing.

What Can You Do During a Glacier Kayaking Elopement?

Kayaking might be the activity that initially gets you excited, but it doesn’t have to be the entire experience.

One of my favorite things about planning Alaska elopements is creating a day where couples are actually doing things together rather than spending hours posing for photos.

Depending on your helicopter operator, glacier conditions, and comfort level, your glacier adventure could include:

• Kayaking across a glacier melt pool
• Exploring blue ice
• Walking across the glacier in microspikes
• Exchanging private vows on the ice
• Having an elopement picnic
• Exploring ice formations with a guide
• Ice climbing
• Taking a glacier plunge when conditions and your guide safely allow it
• Flying to a second glacier
• Adding an alpine or mountaintop helicopter landing
• Taking cinematic drone photos where legally and safely permitted

You don’t need to do everything. Choose the experiences that genuinely sound exciting to you and give yourselves enough time to actually enjoy them.

Add Dog Sledding on the Glacier to Your Elopement

After kayaking across a glacier pool, you can take your Alaska elopement adventure even further with dog sledding on a glacier.

Some helicopter experiences allow you to combine a glacier adventure with a visit to a remote dog sledding camp located high in the mountains.

You’ll fly across Alaska’s landscape before landing at the camp, where you can meet the sled dogs and experience mushing across the snow together.

It’s an incredible option for couples who want their wedding day to feel like a full Alaska adventure rather than simply visiting the glacier for photos.

When Can You Go Glacier Dog Sledding in Alaska?

Glacier dog sledding is generally a late spring and summer activity, with many helicopter dog sledding operations running approximately May through August, depending on the operator, snow conditions, and weather.

Because the camps are located at higher elevations on glaciers and snowfields, you can experience a snowy dog sled ride even when the landscape at lower elevations is green.

If dog sledding is one of your priorities, I recommend planning your Alaska elopement within this seasonal window and booking early.

Can You Combine Glacier Kayaking + Dog Sledding?

Potentially, yes.

Depending on the helicopter company, locations, current glacier conditions, and logistics, we can look at building multiple adventures into your elopement experience.

Your day could include:

Helicopter flight → glacier landing → private vows → glacier kayaking → dog sledding → scenic flight back

For couples who don’t want to fit everything into one day, these activities also work incredibly well for a multi-day Alaska elopement.

Day one could be dedicated to your ceremony and glacier kayaking adventure, while day two takes you back into the mountains for helicopter dog sledding.

Because both experiences are highly dependent on weather, seasonal operations, glacier conditions, and helicopter availability, flexibility is important.

Can We Say Our Vows on the Glacier?

Absolutely.

Your glacier kayaking experience doesn’t have to replace your ceremony—it can be part of it.

You could land on the glacier, explore for a little while, and then find a beautiful location for your private vows before kayaking.

Another option is separating your ceremony and glacier adventure.

If you’re bringing family, you could have your official ceremony somewhere more accessible with your guests and then take the helicopter out afterward for an adventure with just the two of you.

For a multi-day Alaska elopement, we can separate these experiences even further. One day could include your ceremony and family celebration while another is dedicated entirely to your helicopter and glacier adventure.

What Should You Wear for an Alaska Glacier Elopement?

You can absolutely kayak and explore the glacier in your wedding attire, but footwear matters.

Wear hiking boots.

Traditional wedding shoes aren’t designed for walking across glacier ice and uneven terrain.

For walking on the glacier itself, your helicopter or glacier operator will typically provide the necessary traction equipment, such as microspikes, based on current conditions.

You’ll also want layers.

Even during summer, conditions on the glacier can feel significantly different from what you experienced before taking off.

I recommend bringing:

• Hiking boots
• Warm base layers
• A jacket that can easily be taken on and off
• Gloves
• Sunglasses
• Sunscreen
• Extra socks
• Water
• A small adventure bag

Your exact packing list should ultimately be based on your helicopter operator’s requirements and the forecast for your elopement day.

Will My Wedding Dress Get Wet or Dirty?

Possibly!

And I think it’s important to know that before planning this type of elopement.

You’re walking across real ice, climbing in and out of a kayak, and exploring an outdoor environment.

Your dress may touch the ice or water. Your boots may get dirty. Your hair may move in the wind.

Choose wedding attire that you’re comfortable actually adventuring in.

Flowy dresses photograph beautifully against the ice, but mobility should be just as important as how your outfit looks.

What Happens If the Helicopter Can’t Fly?

Weather flexibility is one of the most important parts of planning any Alaska helicopter elopement.

Cloud cover, wind, visibility, and changing weather can affect whether your helicopter can safely fly.

That’s why I build flexibility into Alaska elopement timelines rather than planning every minute of the day.

Whenever possible, I also recommend giving yourself additional days in Alaska around your elopement rather than flying in immediately before the wedding and leaving immediately afterward.

Most importantly, have a backup plan you’re genuinely excited about.

If we can’t reach the glacier, your wedding day isn’t ruined.

Alaska has mountains, glacier-fed lakes, forests, waterfalls, coastal landscapes, and countless other places where we can create an incredible experience.

The helicopter can be Plan A.

Your Plan B should still feel worthy of being your wedding day.

Glacier Kayaking vs. Glacier Lake Kayaking

This is an important distinction when you’re researching an Alaska elopement.

Glacier kayaking can refer to paddling directly on a meltwater pool located on the glacier itself.

Glacier lake kayaking generally means kayaking on a lake near a glacier, often surrounded by floating icebergs.

Both are incredible experiences, but they’re completely different.

If your dream is to fly by helicopter onto a glacier and paddle across one of those intensely blue pools surrounded by ice, specifically ask about on-glacier meltwater pool kayaking.

If you’d rather spend several hours paddling among icebergs with a glacier towering in the distance, a glacier lake kayaking experience may actually be the better choice.

Is Glacier Kayaking Safe?

Glaciers are constantly moving and changing environments, so this isn’t an activity I recommend attempting independently.

Crevasses, unstable ice, changing water levels, and other glacier hazards aren’t always obvious if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

Your helicopter pilot and glacier guides should determine where you can safely land, walk, explore, and kayak.

The goal isn’t to push boundaries for a photograph.

It’s to have an incredible experience in one of the wildest places in Alaska while respecting the environment and the professionals who understand it.

How Much Time Should We Plan for a Glacier Kayaking Elopement?

I wouldn’t recommend building this experience around a quick helicopter landing.

If kayaking is important to you, give yourselves time.

You’ll need to account for check-in, safety briefings, loading the helicopter, flight time, landing, getting your gear situated, exploring the glacier, kayaking, your ceremony, and photographs.

You also don’t want your vows to feel like something you have to rush through because the helicopter is waiting.

For couples who want multiple experiences—especially glacier kayaking plus dog sledding or another Alaska adventure—I generally recommend a full-day or multi-day elopement.

What Else Can You Add to an Alaska Elopement?

If you’re already traveling all the way to Alaska, consider turning your elopement into an adventure you couldn’t recreate anywhere else.

Depending on your location and season, you could add:

• Glacier kayaking
• Glacier dog sledding
• Ice climbing
• Scenic helicopter flight
• Second glacier or mountaintop landing
• Floatplane adventure
• Whale watching
• Wildlife cruise
• Sea kayaking
• Glacier lake kayaking
• Private boat charter
• Hiking
• Mountain picnic
• Fishing
• ATV adventure
• Exploring an Alaska coastal town
• Cabin stay
• Private chef dinner

You can also combine several of these into a multi-day elopement rather than trying to fit everything into eight hours.

Full-Day vs. Multi-Day Alaska Glacier Elopement

If you’re traveling to Alaska specifically because you want adventure, don’t feel like you have to squeeze everything into a traditional wedding timeline.

Alaska is enormous.

Trying to fit a glacier flight, kayaking, dog sledding, vows, hiking, and mountains into a few hours can turn what should be an incredible experience into a checklist.

With a full day, we can create breathing room.

With multiple days, we can create completely different experiences.

For example:

Day One: Glacier Adventure

Get ready at your cabin before heading to the helicopter base.

Fly over Alaska’s mountains and glaciers before landing on the ice.

Explore the glacier, exchange private vows, kayak across a blue meltwater pool, and celebrate together.

Finish your evening with dinner, sunset, or lantern photos.

Day Two: Dog Sledding + Mountains

Take another scenic helicopter flight into the mountains and land at a glacier dog sledding camp.

Meet the dogs, go mushing across the snow, and spend the rest of the day exploring another part of Alaska together.

A multi-day elopement also gives us additional flexibility when working around Alaska’s unpredictable weather.

How Far in Advance Should We Plan?

I recommend beginning the planning process as early as possible, especially if glacier kayaking, dog sledding, or a private helicopter experience is a priority.

There are multiple moving pieces involved:
