Eloping with Your Dog in Sedona: A Guide to a Perfect Elopement Day with your Pup!

Eloping is an intimate and personal way to say “I do,” and if you’re a dog lover, including your furry friend in your special day can make it even more memorable. Sedona, with its stunning red rock landscapes and dog-friendly hiking trails, is the perfect destination for couples looking to elope with their four-legged companion. Here’s everything you need to know to plan a magical elopement in Sedona with your beloved pup.

Top Dog-Friendly Hiking Trails in Sedona

1. Subway Cave Trail

Length: Approximately 5.5 miles round trip

Duration: 2-4 hours

The Subway Cave Trail is a hidden gem in Sedona, offering breathtaking views and a sense of adventure. This moderate hike leads to a stunning cave that resembles a subway tunnel, making for a unique backdrop for your elopement photos. The trail is dog-friendly, but be prepared for some rocky sections. Ensure your dog is comfortable with hiking and navigating uneven terrain. The Subway Cave itself is very steep to get to and narrow so it may be unsafe to bring your dog up to the cave, but the base below the cave offers a stunning view of the valley and would make for a stunning sunrise ceremony location.

2. Cathedral Rock Trail

Length: Approximately 1.2 miles round trip

Duration: 1-2 hours

One of Sedona’s most iconic landmarks, the Cathedral Rock Trail, is a must-visit for eloping couples. This short but steep hike rewards you with panoramic views of the red rocks and the Verde Valley. For this trail, I always recommend to my couples who are including their pup to only hike to the base, especially since it is the most safe and less strenuous option for their dog. You can hike to the base of Cathedral Rock and have a stunning sunrise elopement ceremony there, with the iconic rock as your backdrop. The ascent can be dangerous and challenging for your dog due to its steepness, so make sure your pup is up for the adventure and that you’re able to lift/carry your dog up and down the trail if needed.

3. Devil’s Bridge Trail

Length: Approximately 4.2 miles round trip

Duration: 2-4 hours

Devil’s Bridge is the largest natural sandstone arch in the area and a popular spot for photos. The hike to the bridge is moderate, with a gradual incline leading to a short but steep climb at the end. The view from the top is spectacular and makes for a memorable elopement location. This trail is also dog-friendly, but due to the final climb, ensure your dog is comfortable with heights and narrow paths.

Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Elopement with Your Dog

1. Opt for a Sunrise Elopement

Sedona can get quite hot during the day, especially in the summer months. To keep your dog comfortable and safe, consider starting your hike early in the morning. A sunrise elopement not only provides cooler temperatures but also offers the most magical lighting for your photos.

2. Keep Your Dog on a Leash

While Sedona’s trails are dog-friendly, it’s important to keep your dog on a leash at all times. This ensures their safety and helps protect the local wildlife and natural environment. A harness can provide better control and comfort for your dog during the hike.

3. Bring Plenty of Water and Treats

Hydration is key, especially in a desert environment. Bring plenty of water for both you and your dog, along with a collapsible bowl for easy drinking. Pack some treats to keep your pup energized and happy throughout the hike.

4. Check Trail Conditions and Regulations

Before setting out, check the latest trail conditions and any regulations that might affect your plans. Some trails may have specific rules regarding dogs, so it’s best to be informed beforehand.

5. Plan for Rest Breaks

Take frequent breaks to let your dog rest and cool down. Find shady spots where you can all relax and enjoy the scenery. These moments can also provide beautiful candid photo opportunities.

6. Pack Dog-Friendly Essentials

In addition to water and treats, bring along other essentials like poop bags, a first-aid kit for your dog, and a blanket or towel for them to rest on. It’s also a good idea to have some dog-friendly sunscreen if your pup has a short coat.

Making Memories with Your Dog in Sedona

Including your dog in your elopement is a wonderful way to celebrate your love in the presence of your loyal companion. With Sedona’s stunning landscapes and dog-friendly trails, you can create unforgettable memories together. Just remember to plan ahead, prioritize your dog’s safety and comfort, and soak in the beauty of your special day. Happy eloping!

"Sheryl is the absolute best! She has great upbeat energy yet makes you feel calm and confident during the photoshoot. She is the perfect combo of hype and grace. We were both so nervous to be in front of the camera, but Sheryl provided great suggestions for poses and movement. Eventually, we became so comfortable that she captured some of the most candid moments that didn’t feel forced. We both were so happy with how natural and candid the pictures turned out. Sheryl captured such beautiful memories that we are going to cherish for a lifetime. Her pictures stand out because it feels so organic and her editing is timeless. We are so grateful for Sheryl and her photography skills!"

"I could try to describe how wonderful Sheryl is as a photographer both artistically as well as personally, but I don’t think I command enough mastery of the English language to do her and the magic she creates with her camera justice. Sheryl is an artist and a savant at that. She is to the digital photograph what Saragent is to the canvas, in addition to being a genuinely pleasant, incredibly kind, and unbelievably thoughtful person to work with."

"I could not recommend Sheryl enough!! Me and my husband were so nervous to have our photos done because of how awkward we can be, but Sheryl made us feel so comfortable and gave us prompts that were so fun! She has the best energy & her excitement and passion for photography is so amazing to work with. We are so grateful we had the opportunity to meet and work with her, and can’t wait to reach out to her for future photos! If you are looking for a sign to book her, this is it!!"
