Your Guide to your dream Sunset Cliffs Elopement: How to Elope at Sunset Cliffs, California

Imagine exchanging vows with your partner as the sun dips below the horizon, casting golden hues over the Pacific Ocean. Sunset Cliffs, located in San Diego, offers the perfect backdrop for couples who want to elope in a stunning coastal setting. With its dramatic sea views, rugged cliffs, and tranquil atmosphere, it’s no wonder this location is a favorite for intimate elopements.

Why Choose Sunset Cliffs for Your Elopement?

Sunset Cliffs is known for its breathtaking sunsets, giving couples a naturally romantic setting for their elopement in San Diego. It’s the ideal location for couples who want to embrace the beauty of nature without straying too far from the conveniences of the city of San Diego.

How to Get a Permit to Elope at Sunset Cliffs

Like most outdoor wedding locations in San Diego, a permit is required for elopements at Sunset Cliffs to ensure your elopement ceremony runs smoothly and follows city regulations.

Contact the City of San Diego’s Park and Recreation Department

You can apply for a ceremony permit directly through their website or by contacting them via phone. Here is a link to their website: https://www.sandiego.gov/park-and-recreation/parks/permits

Submit Your Application Early

It’s recommended to submit your permit application for your Sunset Cliffs elopement as early as possible to secure your preferred date and location. San Diego’s coastline is a popular spot, and Sunset Cliffs can get busy, especially during peak season. Here is a link to the application: https://www.sandiego.gov/sites/default/files/parkusepermitapp.pdf

Permit Fees

Be prepared to pay a non-refundable application fee. As of this writing, permit fees vary depending on the number of guests and the scope of your elopement ceremony. For elopements, the fee is currently $191, but it’s best to check with the city for the most up-to-date information.

The Best Time of Year for a Sunset Cliffs Elopement

San Diego boasts pleasant weather year-round, but certain months are more ideal for an elopement at Sunset Cliffs. Spring and fall are typically the best times, with mild temperatures and fewer crowds. Summers can be beautiful, but they also tend to be busier with tourists and locals enjoying the beach. Winter can be the best way to avoid crowds, but there is increased chance of precipitation.

Capturing Your Elopement at Sunset

Sunset Cliffs offers a variety of stunning backdrops, from the cliffs themselves to the picturesque beaches nearby. For couples who want to capture every detail of their Sunset Cliffs elopement, it’s essential to time your elopement ceremony around golden hour (typically an hour or so before sunset). The soft, warm lighting during this time makes for truly magical photographs. Additionally, try your best to schedule your elopement on a weekday; I recommend Monday to Wednesday to avoid the weekend crowds!

"Sheryl is the absolute best! She has great upbeat energy yet makes you feel calm and confident during the photoshoot. She is the perfect combo of hype and grace. We were both so nervous to be in front of the camera, but Sheryl provided great suggestions for poses and movement. Eventually, we became so comfortable that she captured some of the most candid moments that didn’t feel forced. We both were so happy with how natural and candid the pictures turned out. Sheryl captured such beautiful memories that we are going to cherish for a lifetime. Her pictures stand out because it feels so organic and her editing is timeless. We are so grateful for Sheryl and her photography skills!"

annika & Michael

"I could try to describe how wonderful Sheryl is as a photographer both artistically as well as personally, but I don’t think I command enough mastery of the English language to do her and the magic she creates with her camera justice. Sheryl is an artist and a savant at that. She is to the digital photograph what Saragent is to the canvas, in addition to being a genuinely pleasant, incredibly kind, and unbelievably thoughtful person to work with."

JENN & KAI

"I could not recommend Sheryl enough!! Me and my husband were so nervous to have our photos done because of how awkward we can be, but Sheryl made us feel so comfortable and gave us prompts that were so fun! She has the best energy & her excitement and passion for photography is so amazing to work with. We are so grateful we had the opportunity to meet and work with her, and can’t wait to reach out to her for future photos! If you are looking for a sign to book her, this is it!!"
