The desert gives you a completely blank canvas for your elopement day—and the Imperial Sand Dunes near Glamis, California, are one of my favorite places to create that experience.

A Glamis sand dunes elopement can feel like you traveled halfway around the world without ever leaving Southern California.

But the desert also comes with some very important planning considerations. The time of year, temperatures, wind, accessibility, permits, and even what shoes you wear can make a huge difference.

Where Are the Glamis Sand Dunes?

The Glamis Sand Dunes are part of the larger Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area in southeastern California.

Located near the California-Arizona border, this massive dune system stretches for miles and creates those dramatic, rolling sand dunes you might normally associate with destinations much farther away.

For couples looking for an adventurous desert elopement, Glamis offers an incredibly unique landscape while still being accessible from Southern California and Arizona.

The area is remote, though, which is part of what makes it so beautiful. You’ll want to plan your transportation, accommodations, water, food, and other logistics ahead of time rather than expecting restaurants and amenities right around the corner.

What Is the Best Time of Year for a Sand Dunes Elopement?

Timing is probably the most important decision you’ll make when planning a Glamis sand dunes elopement.

The desert can experience extreme temperatures, especially during the summer.

Best Months for a Glamis Sand Dunes Elopement: October Through May

Generally, the cooler months are going to give you a much more enjoyable experience.

Late fall, winter, and early spring can bring comfortable temperatures that make it possible to actually explore the dunes without dealing with dangerous summer heat.

Temperatures can still fluctuate significantly in the desert, so always check the forecast leading up to your elopement.

Months to Avoid: June Through September

I would not recommend planning a sand dunes elopement from June through September because of the extreme heat.

Summer temperatures in the Imperial Valley can climb well above 100°F, and the exposed dunes provide essentially no natural shade.

The sand itself can also become extremely hot.

Even if you plan your ceremony around sunset, you’re still dealing with accumulated daytime heat and potentially dangerous conditions.

Your elopement should feel adventurous and fun—not like you’re trying to survive the desert.

If you have flexibility with your date, choose the cooler months.

What Time of Day Is Best for a Glamis Sand Dunes Elopement?

Sunset is my favorite time for a sand dunes elopement.

Because there are very few obstructions on the dunes, you can get gorgeous light across the landscape as the sun gets lower.

The dunes begin creating their own shadows, which emphasizes all of those beautiful curves and textures in the sand.

Instead of arriving right at sunset, I recommend giving yourself plenty of time beforehand. Walking through sand is significantly slower and more tiring than walking on a normal trail.

That extra time also gives you room to explore without feeling rushed.

After sunset, the desert can completely transform again.

Blue hour, lantern photos, and—depending on the conditions—stars can make an incredible ending to your elopement day.

What Does a Sand Dunes Elopement Actually Look Like?

One of the best parts about eloping is that you don’t have to follow a traditional wedding-day timeline.

Your day could start with getting ready separately before meeting at the dunes for a first look.

From there, you could explore together, find a private location for your vows, exchange rings as the sun begins to drop, and spend sunset running around the dunes together.

You could bring a small cake or champagne for a simple celebration afterward.

Once the sun disappears, you could finish your adventure with lantern photos or stargazing.

There doesn’t need to be a venue, aisle, elaborate reception, or strict schedule.

Your elopement can simply be about experiencing somewhere incredible together.

What Should You Wear for a Sand Dunes Elopement?

Movement photographs beautifully in the dunes.

Lightweight dresses, flowing skirts, veils, and fabrics that catch the wind can look incredible against the simplicity of the desert.

But remember: you are going to get sandy.

That is part of the experience!

I wouldn’t recommend wearing shoes that you’re worried about ruining. Many couples choose boots or comfortable shoes like sandals for exploring and change when necessary.

You may even decide to go barefoot for portions of the day when temperatures allow.

For suits, lighter and more breathable fabrics can be helpful, particularly during warmer months.

And always bring layers.

Desert temperatures can drop quickly once the sun goes down.

Be Prepared for Wind at the Sand Dunes

Wind is another major factor when planning a sand dunes elopement.

A light breeze can be beautiful for photos.

Strong winds are a different story.

Blowing sand can become uncomfortable very quickly, especially around your eyes, camera equipment, food, and anything you’re trying to set up.

Keep an eye on the wind forecast in addition to temperature and precipitation.

This is also one reason I recommend keeping your setup relatively simple. Elaborate décor isn’t necessary when the landscape already provides such an incredible backdrop.

How Much Walking Is Involved at a Glamis Sand Dunes Elopement?

Walking through sand takes more energy than most couples expect.

You don’t necessarily need to hike for miles to have an incredible Glamis sand dunes elopement, but you should be comfortable walking uphill through soft sand.

I recommend building extra time into your timeline so you don’t feel like you’re racing toward a location.

The goal isn’t to get as far into the dunes as possible.

It’s to find a beautiful area, slow down, and actually enjoy your wedding day.

What Should You Bring to a Sand Dunes Elopement?

The desert is one of those places where being prepared makes a huge difference.

For a sand dunes elopement, I recommend bringing:

• Electrolytes
• Sunscreen
• Sunglasses
• Comfortable shoes
• Layers for after sunset
• Headlamps or flashlights
• Snacks
• A small towel or brush for sand
• Portable phone charger
• Emergency supplies
• A secure bag for anything you don’t want filled with sand

Cell service can also be inconsistent in remote desert areas, so download maps and important information before arriving.

Do You Need a Permit for a Glamis Sand Dunes Elopement?

Permit requirements can depend on exactly what you’re planning, where you’re holding the ceremony, the size of your group, and whether professional photography or other commercial activity is involved.

Because the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management, I recommend checking directly with the BLM before your elopement for the most current permit and recreation requirements.

Don’t assume that because you’re eloping outdoors, you automatically don’t need a permit.

Regulations can change, and it’s always better to confirm everything ahead of time.

Can You Have Guests at a Sand Dunes Elopement?

Potentially, yes!

A sand dunes elopement works especially well for just the two of you or a very small group.

If you’re bringing guests, however, accessibility becomes much more important.

Walking through deep sand can be challenging for older family members, young children, or anyone with mobility limitations.

You’ll also need to consider transportation, bathrooms, heat exposure, water, and how far everyone will need to walk.

For couples who want family involved but still want an adventurous experience, another option is to have a simple ceremony with your loved ones and then head deeper into the dunes together afterward for your private adventure and portraits.

There are so many beautiful cooler-weather dates available that I don’t think it’s worth taking the risk.

Sunset is incredible in the dunes.

The lower sun creates dramatic shadows and definition across the sand, while golden hour can produce beautiful warm light.

I also love continuing after sunset for blue hour, lantern photos, and potentially stars.

Is It Hard to Walk Through the Sand Dunes?

It can be! Walking uphill through loose sand takes considerably more effort than walking on a normal trail.

You don’t have to venture miles into the dunes, though. A thoughtfully planned location and timeline can give you an adventurous experience without exhausting you before your ceremony.

Can I Wear a Wedding Dress in the Sand Dunes?

Absolutely.

Flowy wedding dresses photograph beautifully in the dunes, especially when there’s a light breeze. Just expect your dress to get sandy.

For an adventure elopement, embracing a little dirt and sand is part of the experience.

Are the Glamis Sand Dunes Crowded?

It depends heavily on the day and season.

The Imperial Sand Dunes are extremely popular for off-highway vehicle recreation, particularly during the cooler season and around busy weekends and holidays.

If privacy is important to you, your date, exact location, and timeline should be chosen strategically.

Can We Take Star Photos During Our Sand Dunes Elopement?

Potentially, yes!

The desert can provide beautiful opportunities for nighttime photography because you’re away from many of the bright lights of major cities.

However, star visibility depends on factors including cloud cover, moon illumination, time of year, and your exact location.

If star photos are a priority, I recommend considering those conditions when choosing your elopement date rather than simply hoping for stars on the night of your wedding.

What Happens If It’s Windy?

Some wind can look amazing in photos, especially with a veil or flowing dress.

Strong winds can make blowing sand uncomfortable or even unsafe, though. Your photographer should keep an eye on weather and wind conditions and have a backup plan when necessary.
