Elopement Ceremony Trail Recommendation: sunrise nature trail (max 24) or wonderland trail (max 12)

permit information

A Special Use Permit is REQUIRED for any elopement taking place within Mount Rainier National Park, Here is the information needed for to apply for your permit. Please let me know which location you have decided on BEFORE applying or if you have any questions.

  • Email the application, along with your Pay.gov Transaction ID, to mora_special_use@nps.gov.

  • Applications should be submitted at least four weeks before the requested date. Please contact the Permit Coordinator via email if expediting of your application is requested (less than four weeks advance submission).

  • Once your application is received by the Permit Coordinator, they will work with you on conditions of your requested permit. A management fee of $250 will be assessed for Weddings to recover costs associated with this permit request.

  • The management fee must be paid prior to finalization of the permit.

This is the trail I recommend for your ceremony with your family! Here is a link to AllTrails: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/washington/sunrise-nature-trail

View from the Trail

After careful review of the location options for groups with max size of 24, Sunrise Trail is the one I recommend. It has parking, a visitor center, bathrooms, and a well-maintained trail that would support your ceremony. The entire loop is 1.5 miles, but we would walk under 1 mile roundtrip.

Per NPS website: "Sunrise Nature Trail has a maximum day use group size of 24 and allows one permit to be issued per day. Permits [for this trail] can be issued for any day of the week, any time of day."

Second best option: Reflection Lake from Wonderland Trail

NOTE: Max group size is 12 people. If you have a group size of 24, we would need to have the other 12 people observing from a distance.

Per NPS website: "Wonderland Trail has a maximum day use group size of 12 and allows multiple permits to be issued per day. Permits can be issued for any day of the week, any time of day."

If you would like to look at other options within the park, here is the map that allows you to filter by group size and days of the week: https://www.nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/permitsandreservations.htm#SUPLocationsMap
