Kristin & Sam’s Redwoods Micro Wedding: An Ocean Cliff A-Frame, Forest Vows & Family-Filled Magic

If you’re dreaming of a wedding day that’s intimate, meaningful, and filled with slow moments in nature—elope in the redwoods! That’s exactly what Kristin and Sam did. Their Redwoods wedding was the perfect blend of forest magic, views, and family-centered celebration. Every moment felt intentional, grounded, and beautifully them.
Getting Ready in a Cliffside A-Frame
The day began tucked away in an A-frame cabin nestled behind the redwoods, perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific. Morning light poured through the trees and the windows, wrapping the space in warmth. Inside, Kristin got ready surrounded by family—quiet laughter, soft music, the kind of peace that only happens when you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.
After slipping into her wedding gown, she took a moment for someone very special—her dad.

A Tearful First Look with Her Father
In a quiet moment outside the cabin, Kristin shared a first look with her father, tears welling in both their eyes. She handed him a letter she had written just for him—a heartfelt reflection on the love, lessons, and strength he had given her over the years. There wasn’t a dry eye in sight. It was the kind of memory that becomes a part of you forever.

A Beachside First Look with Sam and Milo
Soon after, we made our way down to the coast, where Sam stood waiting on the sand with their golden retriever, Milo, by his side. The waves crashed gently in the background as Kristin walked toward them—dress flowing, wind tugging at the hem, eyes locked on her soon-to-be husband. Their first look was full of joy, emotion, and tail wags. Milo even joined in for kisses and snuggles, naturally stealing a little bit of the spotlight.

Private Vows by the Sea
With no one else around, Kristin and Sam exchanged private vows on the beach, speaking words meant only for each other. The ocean roared behind them, the sun glowed low on the horizon—it was the kind of moment that didn’t need an audience. Just the two of them, promising forever.

A Redwoods Wedding Ceremony with Family
Later that afternoon, we made our way back into the forest for their Redwoods wedding ceremony. Under a canopy of ancient giants, surrounded by their closest family, they said “I do.” The space was serene and sacred, the sunlight filtered through the trees in golden streaks, and every word echoed with intention.

Exploring the Sequoia Park Zoo Skywalk for Forest Portraits
After their beach vows and redwoods ceremony, Kristin and Sam added one more incredible stop to their Redwoods elopement adventure—the Sequoia Park Zoo Skywalk. It’s not your typical wedding portrait location, and that’s exactly what made it so special.
They wandered hand-in-hand through the lush zoo grounds, snapped photos with bright pink flamingos, and made our way up to the suspended bridges of the Skywalk—high above the forest floor. Floating among the ferns and redwoods, with sunlight filtering through the canopy, the views were absolutely surreal.
It was playful, romantic, and a little wild. The perfect way to capture their adventurous spirit in a totally unique setting. If you’re planning to elope in the redwoods and want to add something unexpected, the Skywalk is such a hidden gem for portraits!

Dinner Beneath the Trees
After the ceremony and couples portraits, they transitioned to a cozy clearing in the forest where a beautifully styled dinner waited. Candles flickered, twinkle lights danced above, and the smell of incredible food filled the air. Everyone gathered around a long wooden table, sharing stories, laughter, and bites of joy in the heart of the redwoods.

Toasts, Cake & Celebration
As the evening unfolded, they cut into a delicious cake and raised glasses with a champagne tower that added just the right touch of sparkle. A mini bar served signature drinks while guests mingled, hugged, and toasted to the newlyweds. It was relaxed. Joyful. Real.

Sunset Lanterns on the Cliffs
As golden hour faded into twilight, we returned to the cliffs for one last adventure—lantern photos overlooking the ocean. With lanterns in hand and wind in their hair, Kristin and Sam embraced the final light of their wedding day wrapped in quiet romance.

Sparklers & Sweatpants
The night ended the way every good redwoods elopement should—back at the A-frame in cozy sweats, gathered around a bonfire, surrounded by family. Sparklers lit up the sky as they laughed, danced, and soaked in every last second of their unforgettable day.

Redwoods Wedding & Elopement FAQ
Where can you have a wedding or elopement in the redwoods?
There are several breathtaking options for your Redwoods wedding in Northern California, including Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods, Del Norte Coast, and Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Each area offers a mix of forest trails, coastal cliffs, and quiet ceremony spots perfect for elopements and small weddings. I help my couples find hidden-gem locations based on their vision, group size, and accessibility needs.
Do you need a permit to elope in the redwoods?
Yes! A redwoods elopement typically requires a Special Use Permit from the park where your ceremony will take place. Each park has different regulations, guest limits, and approved ceremony areas. I guide all my couples through the permitting process to ensure everything is legal, stress-free, and seamless.
What’s the best time of year to elope in the redwoods?
The best months for a redwoods elopement are May through October for warmer weather and less rain. That said, the redwoods are beautiful year-round. Spring offers lush greenery, summer brings soft light filtering through the trees, and fall has fewer crowds and golden tones. Even winter can be stunning with a misty, moody vibe—just prepare for more rain!
Can you bring guests to a redwoods elopement?
Absolutely! Most redwoods parks allow a limited number of guests (usually between 6–20, depending on the location). Kristin & Sam chose to include their immediate family, making their intimate redwoods wedding feel deeply personal while still celebrating with loved ones. I help you choose the right spot based on your guest count, accessibility, and vibe.
What should we wear for a redwoods wedding?
Think layers and textures! Long, flowy dresses photograph beautifully against the trees. Earth tones, lace, velvet, and natural fabrics pair perfectly with the forest. Comfortable shoes are a must—there may be dirt paths or forest trails involved. I provide every couple with a custom packing list and style guide to help you look and feel your best.
Can we include a beach or cliff location too?
Yes! Many couples choose to elope in the redwoods and also incorporate nearby beaches or ocean cliffs into their day for a diverse adventure. Kristin & Sam had a first look and private vow exchange by the ocean before heading into the forest for their ceremony. With the right timeline and planning, you can experience both.
How do we get to the redwoods?
The closest airport is ACV (Arcata-Eureka Airport), about 30–60 minutes from most redwoods locations. You’ll need to rent a car to get around, as Ubers are limited in this remote area. I always recommend flying into ACV, picking up a rental car, and staying in charming nearby towns like Trinidad, Arcata, or Crescent City.
Why should we hire a redwoods elopement photographer?
The redwoods are stunning—but also tricky to photograph due to their scale and lighting. As a Redwoods elopement photographer, I know how to capture the magic of the forest without losing the intimacy of your love story. I also offer location scouting, permit guidance, timeline creation, and planning support—so your day is both stunning and stress-free.
