Best Time to Elope to Florence
Let’s kick things off by talking about the perfect time to tie the knot in Florence. To ensure you nail down that perfect elopement date, check out my handy tips below for the inside scoop on each season in Florence:
Eloping in Florence in the Winter
Picture this – cozy vibes and intimate moments, all wrapped up in Tuscany’s winter magic. Sounds dreamy, right? Well, it totally can be! But let’s keep it real – winter in Florence means chilly days and some rainy days. Between December and February, the average low is 36° F, and the average high is 52° F. The Majority of the rainy days will be in November and December, with the rest of winter being just chilly. If you are willing to endure the cold, major perks are lower travel prices and avoiding the crowds since late winter is one of Florence’s low seasons.
Eloping in Florence during Spring
Spring elopement in Florence? A big YES! Spring is like nature hits the refresh button, and everything comes to life. The month of May, in particular, is absolute perfection! Think mild weather and clear blue skies, with the average low being 76° F and the average high being 54° F. It’s like Florence puts on its best self just for you! However, I would keep in mind there is always potential for rainy days, especially in April. So, if you want a dreamy ceremony amidst the dramatic landscapes of Tuscany, lock in your elopement date for spring!
Eloping in Florence during the Summer
Summer elopement in Tuscany can be a blast, depending on the month. Early and late summer are solid choices for your elopement adventure. But July and August? Better avoid them. Aside from the soaring temperatures, with an average low being 65° F and an average high being 90° F, it’s the peak tourist season with higher travel prices and higher tourist crowds. Aim for early June or early September if you’re set on eloping in summer. Trust me, you don’t want to be melting in the sweltering heat or dodging crowds of tourists while exchanging vows. The main major perk is that June through August are the lowest for rainfall!
Eloping in Florence during the Fall
Fall is one of my favorite seasons for elopements in Florence. It’s like Tuscany’s best-kept secret for elopements! With comfy temps, way fewer tourists clogging up the scenery, and oh, those colors – it’s like Mother Nature breaks out her paintbrush and turns the whole place into a masterpiece of orange, red, and yellow! So, if you want to say “I do” in a postcard-perfect backdrop, fall elopement is for you! Regarding weather, the average high is 59° F, and the average low is 42° F. It’s also the rainiest season, with October and November being the rainiest.
Best Time of Day to Elope in Florence
Golden hour, sunrise or sunset, is hands down the best time to elope in Florence. During this time, the sun is not too harsh and not too shy either – it’s just right! Plus, it’s perfect for those stunning elopement pics – think warm hues, dreamy lighting, and a touch of magic in the air. Your special day deserves that magical and romantic backdrop! If you want to avoid the crowds and have the rest of the day to celebrate, I highly recommend a sunrise elopement over sunset!
Deciding on a Florence Elopement Location
Now, let’s dive into the most exciting part – Florence’s top elopement spots! While the city has its fair share of beauty, the real magic awaits in the Tuscan countryside. From rolling vineyards to ancient castles and cozy hideaways, you’ll find tons of dreamy locations to host your love story, And guess what? Many of these gems are a stone’s throw from Florence, making it easy to get to if the Tuscan capital is your base. Here are my absolute faves:
Piazza del Duomo
Piazza del Duomo is one of the most iconic and romantic elopement spots in Florence, Italy. Surrounded by breathtaking Renaissance architecture and filled with the vibrant energy of the city, eloping at Piazza del Duomo feels like stepping into a scene from a classic romantic film. This historic square, home to the magnificent Florence Cathedral (Duomo di Firenze), offers an unforgettable setting for your special day.
For the best experience, plan your elopement at Piazza del Duomo in the early morning. The soft, golden light of sunrise enhances the marble facade of the cathedral, creating an enchanting atmosphere for your vows. Plus, you’ll avoid the crowds, allowing for more intimate and cherished moments with your partner.
After your ceremony, take a leisurely stroll through the picturesque streets of Florence. Hand in hand, savor the city’s charm as you stop for a delicious gelato or toast with a glass of Chianti, celebrating your new life together in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Radicondoli
If you’re looking for a hidden gem to elope near Florence, Italy, let me introduce you to Radicondoli. Nestled in the rolling hills of Tuscany, Radicondoli offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of Florence, making it an ideal elopement destination. This charming village, with its ancient stone streets and panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside, provides a stunning backdrop for your special day.
For the best experience, plan your elopement in Radicondoli early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The magical Tuscan light during these times will bathe your ceremony in warm, golden hues, creating an unforgettable atmosphere.
After exchanging vows, take a romantic stroll through the picturesque village, soaking in the timeless beauty of Tuscany. Celebrate your love with a meal at a local trattoria, or pack a picnic to enjoy in the shade of an olive grove, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of the countryside.
Agriturismo Le Canterie
I highly recommend Agriturismo Le Canterie for small, intimate elopements near Florence. Tucked away in the picturesque Tuscan countryside, it is a charming farmhouse featuring rustic charm and modern comfort. You’ll exchange vows amidst lush vineyards and rolling hills, with the lavender scent filling the air – it’s romance at its finest!
Choose late spring or early summer for your elopement ceremony. The weather’s just right, and the vibrant colors create the perfect backdrop for saying your “I dos.” Plus, fewer tourists mean you’ll have the place all to yourselves!
Treat your guests to a sumptuous farm-to-table feast featuring delicious local produce and fine Tuscan wines. And don’t forget to kick back and relax by their pool or in the cozy accommodations complete with stunning views of the surrounding Tuscan countryside.
Legally Eloping in Florence
It’s important to note that outdoor elopement venues must have official approval to host elopement ceremonies in Italy. Some venues, such as charming villas, picturesque gardens, and even certain town halls, may grant permission to use their outdoor spaces for your special day.
I always recommend to my couples that they complete their marriage license and certificate in their home country and then have a symbolic ceremony in Italy. This way, when you arrive in Italy, you can relax and enjoy your elopement instead of focusing on completing the legal process during your first few days in the country.
However, if you’re dead set on making it official in Italy as a US Citizen, I recommend giving yourself three months to complete the following:
- Find a local Italian-English-speaking celebrant to help you through the process below.
- Translate your documents into Italian.
- Get an appointment with your local Italian embassy/ consulate in your hometown.
- Bring two witnesses and ensure they have proper identification.
- Make an appointment with the USA embassy/consulate in Italy to obtain the proper documentation to make things legal, including the Atto Notorio.
- Get an appointment at the Italy town hall you plan to marry, and make sure you bring all your completed documents.
TIP: Bring an interpreter if you don’t speak Italian.
Here is a link to the US Embassy website to further explain the proper documents needed above: https://it.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/marriage/
Remember your passports and birth certificates!
